Memorial/Honor program an option at the library
We would like to take the opportunity today to remind you about the memorials and honors programs of the Guthrie Memorial Library - Hanover's Public Library. We know that many of you are already aware that one of your options when you want to remember or honor someone is to choose to place a book or other item or items in the library. We would like to suggest, however, that there may be more uses for this service than you might, at first glance, imagine. Here are a few examples.
We have people who place books in the library in honor of teachers, in honor of someone who has performed a program or service for them and refused to take money as recompense, who honor an anniversary, the birth of a child, a special occasion such as a graduation, marriage, new job, a particular recognition or promotion. One of our board members has made it clear to her friends that she doesn't want presents but books placed in the library for Christmas and her birthday. What we do when someone chooses this lasting way of celebrating one of the above suggestions, is to send a note to the honoree and to the donor including a copy of the bookplate that we have placed inside the book or other item. In the case of a memorial, a note is sent to the next-of-kin. The contribution, of course, is a very welcome addition to the income of the library and helps us to provide services to the community.
Let us also remind you about our perpetual memorials (or honors because they can also be used for special people who are living). For a gift of $100 or more (single gift or combination of one or more), we establish a perpetual fund. Each year thereafter, a book or books (or other items of your choice) are added to the collection with a bookplate inside. Just the other day another area high school class decided that this was the way they wanted to honor deceased members. Families remember parents, grandparents, fellow members of organizations or nursing homes or others who have impacted their lives. The best thing about the perpetual idea is that new items are always being added so that the memory goes on. These items, as well as all other memorials and honors, are listed in the Evening Sun each week. In addition, gifts can be added to existing perpetual funds at any time. We have funds in the thousands of dollars as families have added to them each year on holidays, birthdays, or anniversaries.
Please call us or stop by to discuss how we can best help you to remember or recognize those who are special to you. All such gifts are very important to us and you will have the satisfaction of knowing that your generosity has added to the enjoyment, edification, and education of library customers of all ages.
