Are you a member of the Friends of the Library? If you're not, all you need to do to join this group of wonderful people is call or stop by the library for an application.
The Friends of the Library have been in existence for many years. We don't know when they originally came into existence, but they were extremely active back in the mid sixties when the Wolcott Wing capital campaign was going on. Stories have been told about how they raised money for the building project. In fact, the Friends worked so hard during that time that they burned themselves out.
For about 10 years there was no active Friends group, although they still had a bank account. We resurrected the Friends in 1977 with the main goal of providing programming for the library, activities that the limited budget and staff just didn't allow for. The group has been a tremendous help to the library ever since. What began only as monthly evening programs eventually grew into monthly noontime book talks, support for the summer reading club, and occasional fund raising for particular projects necessary for the library but not funded through the general fund. Special projects have come and gone such as the several years that the Friends provided a rental collection of best sellers because the library's budget was not ample enough to suppy them.
Currently as has been the norm through the years, the Friends of the Library officers are a hardworking group who meet monthly to plan programs and to manage the work of the organization. We could not ever thank them enough for their dedication and support.
Membership fees are moderate and we welcome new members all the time. We do send out an occasional newsletter that list all the events and includes news of the Library. Please join us; or, if you have not renewed your membership in recent years, come on back!
